On the heels of her performance at JAZZ LIVES 2008, sultry singer Chantal Chamberland will join Dinner Jazz host Brad Barker on Tuesday, May 20 to debut songs from her latest CD The Other Woman, live from the JAZZ.FM91 VISIT FLORIDA® Performance Area.
Rapidly changing rhythms, crisp ensemble playing, a broad sonic feel and unique voicings define South American Suite, an adventurously composed look at Brazilian music from multireedist/flutist Felipe Salles. While he draws on Brazilian music, Salles eschews the breezy bossa beats that are typically associated with that country's jazz intercourse. Instead, he utilizes lesser-known styles such as choro, frevo and baiA o to inspire new extended compositions and advanced arrangements for a distinctive take on Latin jazz...

By the late 1950s, Nat King Cole wasn’t just an American treasure; his star shone beyond the shores of the United States and gave him international acclaim. This led to Cole’s desire to record songs in different languages. In 1958, he released Cole Espanol, a full album of Spanish language tunes. Contrary to what the Capitol suits...

The emFire Collection: Mixed, Unmixed & Remixed feels like a disappointing mix of the old and the not very good.
The original tracks for Sasha's emFire label were released digitally and on decorative vinyl. (I previously reviewed the tracks "Coma" and "Park in the Shade".) The tracks were long, the build very techy and unique, and even if some of them weren't among Sasha's best, they were at the very least examples of his...
Interesting style mash-up from Sied van Riel and Tiësto's production right-hand man, Geert Huinink. The first act steps down a tech road complete with a dark, pulsating bassline and increasingly misshapen synths. Past the second minute though and the strings start to swell. With a couple of bashes of the orchestral drum the production raises them up to full-on Adaggio' level. An intriguing mix likely to further boost the producers' against-type reputation.
Shure Incorporated placed a filing with the Federal Communications Commission Monday vehemently against the approaches taken in “white space” plans proffered by major technology companies--including Microsoft, Google and Motorola--that would reallocate use of the “empty channels” between broadcast television stations’ frequencies.
In a case that has taken six years to reach court, defense attorneys for R. Kelly are once again seeking to delay the trial for the R&B singer who is facing multiple child pornography charges.

According to this report on the BBC News website, the organisers of The Custom Rock And Blues Festival have withdrawn their application for a licence amid fears of violence after a biker's death.
The Custom Rock and Blues Festival was scheduled to take place at Catton Hall in south Derbyshire in August.
But police feared some people may have used it for 'high-profile' retaliation over the death of Hell's Angel Motorcycle Club member Gerard Tobin.
The 35-year-old from south London was shot dead on the M40 last August.
Police objected to the four-day event because they said there was an unacceptable risk to local people and the event's 15,000 visitors.
Intelligence suggested a clash between rival biker gangs over the death of Mr Tobin who was shot dead leaving a bikers' festival on the M40 in south Warwickshire.
In a statement, events organisers One Percent Entertainments Limited said: "We have not received threats of any kind about this event.
"However, we have a duty to customers, employees and the general public to take very seriously any representations made by the police based on intelligence which they have, no matter how sensationalised we believe it to have been."
The stage line-up included Glenn Hughes, Molly Hatchet, Fastway, GMT, Blackfoot, Magnum, Hanoi Rocks and Budgie.
In a recent survey of 2,000 British drivers, Meat Loaf’s well-known hit song "Bat Out of Hell" was voted to be the best song to listen to while driving. The larger-than-life American rocker edged out Queen hit "Bohemian Rhapsody," which came in second.
Not surprisingly, the survey also found that the music a driver is listening [...]

Do you think Kanye West takes himself too seriously? He’s well known for blowing up at award shows when he gets stiffed by the establishment in favour of other acts.
Anyway, he took exception to a review of his Seattle gig by Entertainment Weekly where they rated the show a B+.
The review is actually full of [...]
Aaron Aites is a mysterious man. He released a pair of amazing, near masterpieces as Iran a few years ago -- a self-titled collection in 2000 and The Moon Boys in 2002, both on tUMULt -- then he stopped. He was busy working on a Norwegian black metal documentary, Until The Light Takes Us, which he's since completed. For a time, it looked like Dead Oceans was releasing the new album Same Song Over And Over, but the MP3 links over there are dead and now it's slated for release on Narnack. We still don't know an exact date (Narnack just told us "sometime in October"), but Iran has a MySpace with three of the "new" tracks (they've been floating around for the last few years, but never in one place). Each is super. If you haven't heard the old stuff, track it down -- way noisier and fuzzed and lo-fi than this material. He made a conscious decision to up the production value, and while the song's are still strong, there's something even more beautiful about his tunes when you have to dig through a foot of feedback to get to the hook or heartbreak. Yes, Kyp Malone from TV On The Radio is in the band, but Iran is really the brainchild and obsession of Aaites -- and we're glad to have him back.
For those who like to rock hard, here's two live metal reviews to salute you.
Initially, I planned on doing two separate reviews for the recently released Gigantour 2 CD and separately sold DVD of the same name, via Image Entertainment. But like many metal fans are sure to attest, you can’t really have one of these releases without the other nearby. And the same theme applies for reviewing these items. And so I will...
Billboard.com has spoken with Carl Palmer about Asia’s upcoming CD and tour. And, of course, the possibility of an ELP reunion. Says Carl:
The album’s pretty adult… It’s not super proggy. Melody-wise it’s unbelievably strong. I would like it to be a little more aggressive, but Asia isn’t an aggressive band except for that first album [...]
