Doomsday (18)

Doomsday is another over-ambitious follow-up to a low-budget smash. Neil Marshall's pot-holing horror thriller The Descent was feted for its claustrophobic setting and tightly focused premise, but his sprawling new film goes as far as possible in the opposite direction. It begins in the present day, with the outbreak of a viral epidemic in Scotland which leads to the whole country being quarantined behind a bullet-proof Hadrian's Wall. Thirty years on, the authorities learn that a scientist (Malcolm McDowell) may have developed a vaccine north of the border, so they send their top agent (Rhona Mitra) to find him. She and her team set off in an armoured car and quickly discover that Glasgow is now populated by bloodthirsty ravers sporting Mohicans and face paint.

CELEBS OF THE WEEK: Mariah Carey

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material. Born in Long Island, NY, on March 27, 1970, Carey moved to New York City at the age of 17 -- just one day after graduating high school -- to pursue a music... [more]

Haga Kenji, Watanabe Jiro
Prosecutors sought an eight-year prison sentence for disgraced actor Haga Kenji (46) at the Osaka District Court yesterday. In the ongoing trial that began in February, Haga is accused of attempted blackmail and fraud of over ¥370 million. Also on trial is former world boxing champion Watanabe Jiro (53), for whom prosecutors are seeking a four-year sentence. Both defendants have pleaded innocent. Haga, real name Toma Mikio, once again turned on the waterworks, shedding tears as he has done at most of the hearings over the last few months. But prosectors said he has shown no sign of repentance and there is no room for taking extenuating circumstances into consideration. The case dates back to 2001, when Haga sold an acquaintance shares in a medical consultancy business at three times their value. When the company went bankrupt in 2006 and the man came looking for his money back, Haga enlisted the help of Watanabe and others. Using threats of violence and worse, they coerced the man into forgiving the debt for a small repayment of ¥10 million. The court's verdict will be handed down on July 15.
